Each of these collages depicts one of the Seven Deadly Sins: Pride, Greed, Wrath, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, and Sloth, presented in order below. The Seven Deadly Sins tempted me as a vivid thematic framework and as a creative challenge given the Sins’ long shadow in art history. To break through the Seven Deadly Sins’ severe moralism and interpret them in an original way, I knew I had to avoid easy associations. No gold coins for Greed. No fat men for Gluttony. The serendipitous process of culling collage images helped me imbue the work with a sense of humor and surprise.

This series was created for Satan’s Food Court at Art Share L.A. in 2019 (installation view below). Greed and Gluttony were featured in the journal Exposition Review, Vol. V: Act/Break in 2020, and Gluttony was included in the online exhibition Vices held by Arc Gallery in San Francisco in 2021.
